Richmond Firefighters: JT's Story

A climb for my Mom, a member of the 1 in 5.
Last year my Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I climb in tribute to her.
We’re all fighting alongside her.
It has been a bumpy road for our family as Mom bravely battles her illness. We’re doing our best to support her however we can.
Thankfully, Mom has an incredible team of doctors.
With their support, and the help of immunotherapy, she has managed to fight back and reduce parts of her cancer, and stopped it spreading. We’re very grateful for this. It means, for the time being, Mom is able to travel out here to the Coast to visit us. She’s pretty excited. There’s even a grand-baby on the way in April!

As a firefighter, I also understand what it’s like to struggle to breathe.
Lung healthcare is something that’s important to anyone in the firefighting field. We’re exposed to so many particles in the air that our gear can’t protect us fully. Climb the Wall is a cause that we feel passionately about.
It’s a great team-bonding day for our hall.
There’s a lot of fun on the day. Jim – our team captain – has a bag-piping group and they pipe all the firefighter participants in. It’s a grand entrance that gets everyone’s spirits up. There’s a contagious energy in the room!
Climb the Wall is a chance for my Mom to give back to the lung healthcare community on her behalf.
Climb the Wall is an important event for my family. It’s an opportunity for us to support a cause for the lung healthcare community we’re deeply involved in and thankful for. To do that alongside something meaningful with my firefighting team is fantastic.
