The Baily's: Jessie's Story

Picture
A Climb to prove I can, as a member of the 1 in 5.

I was diagnosed roughly 30 years ago with exercise induced asthma – and I still struggle with my asthma today.

My son, Kyle, and I both climb in support of others who live with similar breathing challenges.

I know some people outgrow their asthma symptoms, but I unfortunately have not. Thankfully, however, they are not as frequent as they used to be.
Asthma restricts the activities I can do. Sometimes mowing the lawn could set it off. Others, it’s sports, the gym, climbing stairs, or walking up steep hills.
I have an inhaler but I can feel when my breathing is laboured (asthma related as opposed to pushing myself). I’ve learned when to stop. I also do my best not to panic, which is a huge help in avoiding an attack.

I am grateful that my son does not suffer from asthma like me, but I want him to be aware that others do.

It makes me very proud that Kyle climbs with me. It’s important that he’s aware of and understands the difficulties members of the 1 in 5 face with breathing or lung conditions. It’s great to see people of all ages and struggles participating in Climb. I’m glad he gets to witness it.

It’s inspiring to see everyone who takes part in Climb the Wall. I’m excited to participate again this year. We climb for me, and for the others members of the 1 in 5.
